A week later, on October 16, Hyundai is initiating a recall program for its Kona Electric crossovers equipped with an all-electric powertrain, Reuters reported. The reason is the risk of fire in the battery pack.

It is reported that to date, at least 13 cases of fires in these vehicles have been recorded. Incidents have occurred, in particular, in Canada and Austria. According to preliminary data, the problem may be due to a short circuit.

In total, more than 25.5 thousand electric cars produced from September 2017 to March 2020 fall under the revocable program. Service center specialists will diagnose these machines and decide whether to update the software and/or replace the battery pack.

The batteries for Kona Electric vehicles are supplied by LG Chem. It is noted that the experiments already carried out within the framework of the investigation of the problem did not lead to the ignition of the batteries. Therefore, experts do not give a final conclusion about the reasons for the ignition of the battery packs.

Either way, owners of defective machines should contact their dealers. Troubleshooting work will be performed free of charge for motorists.
