IndOS operating system will compete with Android and iOS

Android accounts for over 97% market share in India today

India is working on a project to create its own mobile operating system, tentatively called IndOS, as a joint initiative between the government and private companies, according to Business Standard exclusive information.

Senior government sources say the goal is to compete with Google’s Android in the mobile operating system market. Android accounts for over 97% of the market in India today. Also, the new operating system will compete with Apple’s iOS.

A senior government official, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “India is one of the largest mobile device markets in the world. Our goal is to create a secure Indian mobile operating system that can also provide choice and competition.”

Domestic manufacturers of mobile devices also insist on creating a domestic operating system for mobile devices.
