Format support limited
The team of the popular social network Instagram announced the release of a new feature for users of new Apple smartphones – iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Instagram now has an exclusive feature for the iPhone 12 Pro. ProRAW support is now operational
We are talking about the support that appeared on Instagram for the new ProRAW format, which was introduced by Apple simultaneously with the iPhone 12 and is supported so far only in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models. Apple has activated ProRAW support on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max with the recent release of iOS 14.3.
However, Instagram support for ProRAW is limited. IOS Instagram Responsible Tim Johnsen clarified that DNG images still cannot be edited on Instagram. Apparently, Instagram is just converting ProRAW to JPG.
iPhone 12 Pro users can edit ProRAW photos by other means and then upload them to Instagram without having to convert the photo to JPG themselves. Also, ProRAW files are large, around 25MB, so Instagram compresses them.
As promised by Apple, support for the new ProRAW format will allow you to adjust more parameters in photographs. According to the developers, the format combines Apple-developed multi-frame technologies, the power of computational photography, and the convenience of the RAW format. Users will be able to control color, detail level, and dynamic range in native iPhone applications as well as using other professional editing tools.
