Expressing her gratitude for this honor, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw shared, “I am humbled and deeply honored to be appointed as a Regent of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The RCSed’s Court of Regents comprises distinguished individuals who offer valuable guidance and expertise to the college. This concept was established in 1980, with Professor John Gillingham, the then College President, drawing inspiration from the success of a similar Court in the Australasian College. The idea received early support from Lord Kadoorie in Hong Kong, who became one of the founding members. Initially, ten members, all without medical backgrounds, were elected. Currently, the college boasts both active and Emeritus Regents.

Founded in 1505 by Royal Charter from King James IV, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh holds the distinction of being the world’s oldest Surgical College. With nearly 30,000 members across 100 countries, a significant portion of whom hail from overseas, it plays a pivotal role in all stages of surgical careers, from aspiring medical students to seasoned consultants.
