Expressing her gratitude for this honor, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw shared, “I am humbled and deeply honored to be appointed as a Regent of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. As the oldest surgical college globally, with a membership spanning 100 countries and nearly 30,000 members, RCSed has been at the forefront of upholding the highest standards in surgical and dental practice while providing top-notch medical education. I eagerly anticipate contributing to the college’s mission and pushing the boundaries of surgical excellence.”

The RCSed’s Court of Regents comprises distinguished individuals who offer valuable guidance and expertise to the college. This concept was established in 1980, with Professor John Gillingham, the then College President, drawing inspiration from the success of a similar Court in the Australasian College. The idea received early support from Lord Kadoorie in Hong Kong, who became one of the founding members. Initially, ten members, all without medical backgrounds, were elected. Currently, the college boasts both active and Emeritus Regents.

Founded in 1505 by Royal Charter from King James IV, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh holds the distinction of being the world’s oldest Surgical College. With nearly 30,000 members across 100 countries, a significant portion of whom hail from overseas, it plays a pivotal role in all stages of surgical careers, from aspiring medical students to seasoned consultants.

The RCSed boasts a rich history of promoting excellence in the surgical domain. It serves as a cornerstone for training and certifying surgeons, ensuring global adherence to the highest surgical standards. With a far-reaching impact, it facilitates the exchange of knowledge, collaboration in research, and professional growth among the surgical community.

Beyond its legacy, the RCSed is an embodiment of innovation, continuously adopting cutting-edge technologies and techniques to enhance patient care and surgical outcomes. Its unwavering commitment to advancing surgical knowledge and nurturing the future generation of surgeons establishes it as an indispensable institution in the realm of medical science and healthcare.

Headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, the RCSed also maintains a prominent presence on Birmingham’s prestigious Colmore Row in the UK. Additionally, it operates an international office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, catering to its expanding global membership.
