Leak: Ubisoft Had To Change Name Gods & Monsters Due To Conflict With Energy Drink Manufacturer

Portal TechRaptor drew attention to the published United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) documents that reveal the reason for the change of names of Gods & Monsters.

We will remind, Gods & Monsters announced in June 2019, but after 14 months, in September 2020, the game was re-presented to the public under a different name – Immortals Fenyx Rising.

As it turned out, the name change was caused not only and not so much by the new vision of the project as by a legal conflict between Ubisoft and the energy drink maker Monster Energy.

In April 2020, Monster Energy filed a 186-page objection to registering the Gods & Monsters trademark in connection with possible damage to its brand and related brands (Monster Army, Muscle Monster, etc.), according to the securities posted on the USPTO website.

In May, Ubisoft rejected all the arguments given by Monster Energy and recalled the variety of trademarks with the word Monster, but still renamed Gods & Monsters.

Probably, the French publishing house decided not to waste time, effort, and money on disputes with Monster Energy: at that time the game was still waiting for a re-presentation and a partial change of concept.

Immortals Fenyx Rising will be released on December 3 on PC (Uplay, Epic Games Store), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia. Google cloud service will also receive an exclusive demo of the game.
