Lenovo unveils world’s first foldable laptop with 5G modem – ThinkPad X1 Fold

Back in January at CES 2020, Lenovo showed off the unusual ThinkPad X1 Fold laptop. Its main feature is the use of a large folding touch screen in half, which occupies the entire working area of the novelty. It seems that the manufacturer has decided on the final characteristics, and the device will still reach the shelves this fall.

At the heart of the unusual compact, the laptop is a Lakefield generation Intel Core i5 processor. The chips in this series are built using a 10nm manufacturing process and feature extremely low power consumption and are designed for thin mobile devices. They use a Foveros 3D layered layout that combines cores with different architectures. The Intel Core i5 model is equipped with four low-power Tremont cores for multi-threaded tasks and one high-performance Sunny Cove core (like Ice Lake) for single-threaded workloads. The ThinkPad X1 Fold will be available in two flavors: one large 13.3-inch folding OLED display and two, 9.6-inches each. The manufacturer indicates that the large screen received an aspect ratio of 4: 3, supports a QXGA resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels, and has a brightness level of 300 cd / m 2. It also claims support for 95% DCI-P3 color gamut and Dolby Vision technology. The laptop does not have a discrete graphics card, so the 11th generation Intel UHD graphics subsystem integrated into the central processor is responsible for displaying the picture on the screen.

The compact laptop is equipped with 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM, clocked at 4267 MHz. As a storage subsystem, the novelty will be able to offer an M.2 NVMe drive with a capacity of up to 1 TB.

Wireless capabilities for ThinkPad X1 Fold provides support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 standards. In addition, as an option, the novelty is ready to offer support for the 5G standard. The unfolded dimensions of the laptop are 299.4 x 236.0 x 11.5 mm. Folded – 158.2 x 236.0 x 27.8 mm. The laptop weighs 999 grams. Among other equipment, the ThinkPad X1 Fold offers two USB 3.2 Type-C connectors, as well as a slot with support for SIM-cards in the version of the laptop with support for cellular networks of the 5G standard.

The company also offers a range of optional accessories for the ThinkPad X1 Fold. In particular, we are talking about an electronic pen Mod Pen, a wireless compact Bluetooth keyboard Lenovo Fold Mini Keyboard, a wireless mouse with support for Bluetooth 5.0, and a universal docking station, to which you can connect various additional peripherals.
