As predicted, the most critical acclaim (95% out of 100%) in 2020 went to Persona 5 Royal, an expanded edition of the 2017 Japanese RPG Persona 5.

Metacritic said that Persona 5 Royal is not a completely new release, but you can’t argue with numbers: the closest competitors in the face of The Last of Us Part II, the PS4 version of Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition, Hades and Half-Life: Alyx 93% each.

The top 5 most highly rated (relatively) new games of 2020 according to Metacritic are as follows. The positions of projects with the same average score were determined by additional indicators:

  1. Persona 5 Royal – 95 out of 100%
  2. The Last of Us Part II – 93%;
  3. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition (PS4) – 93%;
  4. Hades – 93%;
  5. Half-Life: Alyx – 93%.In total, at the end of 2020, more than 90% of journalists on Metacritic received 16 games (versus nine in 2019): five were on PC, four on the PlayStation and Xbox family consoles, and three on Nintendo Switch.

    In addition, the aggregator named the most highly rated games and exclusives for each of the main platforms:

    • PC – Half-Life: Alyx with 93%;
    • PS4 – Persona 5 Royal with 95%;
    • PS5 – Demon’s Souls remake with 92%;
    • Xbox One – Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition with 91% (best game) and Call of the Sea with 82% (best exclusive);
    • Xbox Series X & S – Tetris Effect: Connected at 88% (Best Game).

    Recall that the main competitor of Metacritic – OpenCritic – presented more stringent requirements for the novelty of applicants for entering its “Hall of Fame” at the end of 2020, which is why Hades topped the rating with 94 points out of 100.
