LG has denied rumors of its withdrawal from the smartphone market

South Korean publication TheElec recently reported that LG is about to withdraw from the smartphone market. The publication claims that the company will announce this decision by the end of January. It is also reported that all developments of the mobile division of the company will be stopped except for the smartphone with a folding screen LG Rollable.

Android Police has contacted Ken Hong, LG’s global communications manager. He said that rumours about a withdrawal from the mobile market are completely false and have no basis whatsoever. It follows from this that the company will continue to produce smartphones, but it should be admitted that its smartphone business is going through hard times. Concept smartphone LG Wing did not live up to the hopes placed on it and was sold in extremely modest circulation, despite discounts reaching 50 per cent of the device’s cost.

As for LG’s smartphone plans, the Rollable is expected to arrive in March. However, at CES 2021, the company only showed a video showing the features of the device. The actual prototype of the smartphone has not been shown to the public, which may indicate a possible delay. LG is reportedly struggling with the durability and reliability of the roll-up display. It is assumed that due to these problems, the launch of the phone will be postponed to September.

In any case, the outlook for LG’s mobile division looks bad. The company is unlikely to be able to make it profitable until the end of this year, as LG CEO Kwon Bong-Seok promised last year.
