McCarthy discusses potential Biden impeachment: ‘We must seek the truth
During a Fox News interview on Monday evening, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, expressed his belief that the ongoing House Republican investigations into President Joe Biden’s family business dealings are reaching a point where they could lead to an impeachment inquiry.
McCarthy’s statement is the most significant indication so far that Republicans may pursue impeachment proceedings against Biden based on his family’s business connections with Ukrainian and Chinese companies. The Speaker argued that an impeachment inquiry would grant Congress the necessary authority to access crucial information and knowledge to thoroughly investigate the President.
“I am confident that we will pursue this matter until the end, and it is highly likely that this will culminate in an impeachment inquiry, as the Constitution prescribes,” McCarthy emphasized. “Our priority is to find answers to these pressing questions.”
White House spokesperson Ian Sams responded on Twitter, criticizing House Republicans for focusing on investigations into Biden and his family rather than addressing pressing issues like inflation and job creation.
Although McCarthy has expressed support for impeachment investigations targeting some of Biden’s Cabinet officials, he avoided directly threatening the President with impeachment. Previously, Rep. Lauren Boebert from Colorado introduced articles of impeachment against Biden over his handling of the southern border, but McCarthy referred the resolution to the House Judiciary Committee and Homeland Security Committee, avoiding an immediate vote on the matter.
With McCarthy’s support, House Republicans have launched investigations into Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. During the Fox News interview, McCarthy referred to two IRS whistleblowers who claimed that government agencies interfered with their investigation into Hunter Biden and prevented them from following leads that could have implicated the President.
According to McCarthy, President Biden has utilized government resources to benefit his family, akin to actions not seen since the days of Richard Nixon, and has obstructed congressional oversight.
However, some House Republicans, like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, are advocating for even more extensive investigations, including impeaching U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew Graves, in addition to impeaching the President and Mayorkas.
