Microsoft unveils password manager with support for Edge, Google Chrome and iOS and Android apps

Microsoft has built a beta version of a new password manager into the Microsoft Authenticator app that syncs passwords across Edge, Google Chrome, and iOS and Android mobile platforms. The main function of Microsoft Authenticator, like most similar applications, is to auto-complete usernames and passwords to save time.

The app can remember or automatically create a strong password and enter it every time you log into your account, so the user does not need to remember it. Passwords are synchronized from the Microsoft Edge database and can be used on different devices connected to the same Microsoft account. It also supports password syncing with Google Chrome using Microsoft’s AutoComplete extension. Synchronization is performed for all passwords stored in the Microsoft account.

As the resource The Verge points out, last year there were rumours that Microsoft was developing a full-fledged password manager for Microsoft 365 subscription users, but it seems that it was just a manager for Microsoft Authenticator. The auto-complete feature will be useful for Microsoft account users working on multiple devices at once. However, a full-fledged password manager such as Sticky Password, 1Password or LastPass is still the preferred alternative, the newspaper notes.

The new password auto-complete feature is already available in the Microsoft Authenticator app. To use it, you need to enable the corresponding autocomplete tool in the settings of your iOS or Android device.

Autocomplete only works with custom Microsoft accounts and is disabled for corporate users who use the app for phone sign-in or multi-factor authentication. Companies need to additionally enable the autocomplete option for corporate users Microsoft Authenticator.
