Mobile Japanese RPG Fantasian May Be Final Fantasy Creator’s Final Project
Speaking to VGC, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi revealed that the upcoming mobile RPG Fantasian could be his last project due to health concerns.
The 58-year-old founder of Mistwalker, who has worked on famous RPGs such as Chrono Trigger and Kingdom Hearts, told VGC that he regards Fantasian as his last full-fledged project: “ I think it may well be my last project. And with this in mind, we are developing it. ”
Currently, the team has already come to the final touches of the development of Fantasian. The game will be released on iOS via Apple Arcade and is described as an RPG set against a backdrop of over 150 hand-made dioramas.
During his two decades at Square, Sakaguchi invented the first Final Fantasy and directed the series up to and including Final Fantasy V. He continued to oversee the franchise as a screenwriter and producer until he left the company in 2004 to found his own independent studio.
Mistwalker has formed in part thanks to the support of Microsoft. Two exclusive RPGs were created for the Xbox 360: Blue Dragon (2006) and Lost Odyssey (2007). After developing The Last Story for the Nintendo Wii (2011), the company focused exclusively on mobile gaming.
