Tesla is on the penultimate step of the rating

Tesla’s position in a new study by Consumer Reports magazine is lower than a year ago. The reason was the shortcomings identified in the Tesla Model Y electric vehicle.

Model Y weaknesses hit Tesla’s ranking in Consumer Reports’ annual survey

As a reminder, Model Y production began in January. According to Consumer Reports, owners of these electric vehicles have complained about body panel mismatches that need to be corrected, differences in paint colors, and in one case, even human hair stuck in the paint. The final Model Y rating was “much worse than average.”

Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports’ chief editor of automotive testing, recalls that new models often have problems, but Tesla’s problems are atypical.

“I’m surprised we are seeing basic paint and trim problems, as well as problems with body panels,” he said. “It seemed that such problems had been solved a long time ago.”

Compared to last year, Tesla has dropped two places, coming to the last but one place in the ranking of 26 brands on the US market. Only Ford Motor’s Lincoln cars are worse than Tesla electric cars.

On a per-model basis, the Tesla Model S and Model X were rated “below average” and the Model 3 was rated “average”.

The Consumer Reports ranking predicts which new cars will cause fewer or more problems for owners based on data collected from more than 300,000 vehicles from model year 2000 to 2020. This assessment is of great value to consumers and industry leaders.
