Most new iMacs won’t have an easy SSD replacement

Yesterday, the German tech blog iFun.de published information according to which the solid-state drives of the new 27-inch iMac are soldered directly to the motherboard, making it impossible to replace them. Today, MacRumors has access to an internal document for Apple technicians that partially refutes this information.

In the document, Apple indicates that the drive is indeed attached to the motherboard and cannot be removed. However, this only applies to configurations with 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB of permanent memory. With 4TB and 8TB data storage options, the drive still plugs into the motherboard connector and can be replaced if needed.

Apple emphasizes that the SSD and the motherboard are tied together to implement hardware encryption. Therefore, when replacing the motherboard, all user data will be irretrievably lost. As a result, Apple recommends that you regularly back up important documents.

Recall that the iMac presented on August 4th is equipped with tenth generation Intel processors, up to 10-core, high-performance AMD Radeon Pro 5000 series graphics cards, up to 128 GB of DDR4 RAM. They also boast a new front-facing camera and display with True Tone and nano texture support.
