The idea of ​​cooling computer components by immersion in liquid has long been used in the server segment, while in the consumer sector everything is limited to the experiments of individual enthusiasts. But the Chinese company Blueocean hopes to fundamentally reverse the popularity of this type of cooling.

Nowadays, dielectric fluids are used for immersion cooling of components, which are distinguished not only by their high price but also by their toxicity. Founded in 2019, the Chinese company Blueocean is working on refrigerant chemistry and packaging solutions to increase the availability of such refrigeration systems. In addition to being used in servers and base stations of 5G networks, such cooling systems can take root in the desktop segment and even smartphones, according to the company’s representatives, who are referred to by the Nikkei Asian Review.

It is noted that smartphones with support for 5G networks will consume three times more electricity than models for 4G networks. Blueocean was founded by Chinese engineers with research experience in Japan. According to the source, Blueocean expects to launch submersible cooling systems that will not be much more expensive than traditional air cooling systems. Existing competitor products not only use toxic refrigerants, but also create noise due to liquid boiling, and also have large dimensions. It is also planned to eliminate these shortcomings.

The coolant developed by Blueocean does not require replacement for 18-25 years, having high thermal conductivity, fluidity, and insulating properties, as well as chemical stability. In a series of experiments with a desktop system immersed in this liquid, it was possible to achieve a difference of no more than 50 degrees Celsius between the ambient temperature and the GPU or central processor. The prototype cooling system used an external heat exchanger and forced circulation of liquid to reduce overall dimensions. Within three months of its founding, Blueocean managed to get an investment of $ 1.5 million for its development.
