NVIDIA Ampere family graphics cards will have to pay special attention to cooling GDDR6X memory

The number of rumors about gaming-grade NVIDIA Ampere graphics cards in recent days is off the charts, but some of them are downright contradictory and implausible. One of the German resources with a decent reputation insists that the high frequencies of GDDR6X memory chips on new video cards will force you to pay close attention to their cooling.

The strategic choice of NVIDIA when determining the memory characteristics of video cards of the Ampere family, in this case, created not the most favorable situation. It is assumed that the combination of not the widest memory bus and high frequencies will contribute to the high heat dissipation of GDDR6X chips. The working temperature of the latter will approach one hundred degrees Celsius. Graphics cards in this series will require advanced cooling systems that will cover a heavy radiator with a vapor chamber and GDDR6X chips.

According to the German website Igor’s LAB, the cost of a cooling system for reference video cards of the Ampere series will easily surpass $ 155, and it is not yet entirely clear how NVIDIA partners can optimize such costs when developing video cards of their own design. According to the source, the degree of readiness of video cards for the announcement is still far from ideal: even the characteristics of reference video cards have not yet been finally determined, and video cards made by partners can be presented no earlier than the second half of September. Previously, it was believed that they will enter the market at the same time as the reference ones.
