Whether the prices for smartphones themselves will go down is hard to say
Analysts say OLED smartphone prices will drop due to an oversupply caused by the coronavirus pandemic. US sanctions against Huawei aggravate the situation.
OLED Smartphone Screen Prices Will Collapse Soon
The global smartphone market slowed down in the first half of 2020 due to the pandemic. This led to a drop in demand for OLED panels. In the third quarter of this year, 113 million smartphones with OLED displays were shipped, down 17.9% from 2019. UBI Research CEO Choong Hoon Yi said a similar result is expected in the fourth quarter.
About 50% of all iPhones sold this year should have OLED panels, which is expected to be 75% in 2021 and 100% in 2022. It was previously assumed that due to the pandemic, Apple would be able to ship 180 million iPhones in 2020, but now it is expected to ship 220 million smartphones. iPhone 12 is in high demand, and those looking to buy the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are now being asked to wait a whole month.
On the other hand, Huawei’s smartphone business is in decline, negatively impacting the OLED smartphone market. In the second quarter of 2020, the Chinese tech giant accounted for 53.4% of all OLED smartphones in China. However, sources close to the matter have said the company plans to ship only 50 million smartphones in 2021.
