Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards will support ray tracing in all games unless it is built on NVIDIA technology

AMD has begun disclosing real-time ray tracing technology in its new Radeon RX 6000-series graphics cards. The manufacturer gave a small comment to AdoredTV and said that the new video cards will support ray tracing in all games that do not use exclusive APIs, such as NVIDIA DirectX RTX or NVIDIA Vulkan RTX.

“AMD will support game titles using industry standards such as Microsoft DirectX 12 DXR or the upcoming Vulkan Raytracing graphics API. Games using proprietary APIs and ray tracing extensions will not be supported, ”AMD said in a comment.

With this announcement, AMD makes it clear that it is betting on more universal ray-tracing technology standards such as Microsoft DXR and the Vulkan open API. Both standards are becoming more and more popular. It should also be recalled that Intel previously announced support for the DirectX DXR standard in its future video cards. This leaves game developers less reason to focus on NVIDIA RTX technology.

AMD’s announcement also means that ray tracing technology for Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards will be supported in all games already on the market that have DirectX Raytracing (DXR) support. For example, the same Control. However, games like Quake II RTX and Wolfenstein Youngblood that use NVIDIA’s proprietary Vulkan RTX API extensions will not be supported.

The Radeon RX 6800XT and RX 6800 graphics cards will go on sale on November 18. The release of the flagship model Radeon RX 6900XT will be delayed until December 8th. All three cards are equipped with special Ray Accelerators. The number of these blocks is equal to the number of execution units (Compute Units). Thus, the Radeon RX 6800XT has 72, the Radeon RX 6800 has 60, and the flagship solution Radeon RX 6900XT has 80.
