Roscosmos sees no danger in a large asteroid, which on September 1 will come close to Earth

The state corporation Roscosmos commented on the information that tomorrow, September 1, an asteroid 2011 ES4, the size of a multi-story building, will approach our planet.

The named object belongs to the group of “Apollo”, that is, asteroids, whose orbits intersect the earth’s orbit from the outside. According to various estimates, the 2011 ES4 is 22 to 49 meters across.

According to Roskosmos, asteroids from the Apollo group often approach the Earth. So in August 2020, almost 80 approaches were recorded, and one of the bodies approached our planet at a distance of fewer than 8 thousand kilometers.

It is curious that the overwhelming number of encounters recorded in the current month are new objects. Only ten of the bodies near the Earth were discovered earlier – in the period from 2007 to 2018.

As for the mentioned asteroid 2011 ES4, it does not pose a threat to our planet. “ After detection, orbits are calculated for the long term and potential danger to the Earth. The likelihood of a collision of the asteroid 2011 ES4 was calculated back in 2011 and was deemed insignificant, ”says Roscosmos.
