Rumors: GeForce RTX 3080 Ti with 20 GB GDDR6X will be released at the end of February, and GeForce RTX 3060 – in January

According to the authoritative German resource Igor’s LAB, citing its sources, NVIDIA still has not abandoned its plans to release a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti video card with 20 GB of video memory. Initially, it was assumed that this model will be presented in January next year. However, according to the latest information, its release may take place by the end of February, after the Chinese New Year celebrations, which will take place from 11 to 17 February.

The original GeForce RTX 3080 model released for sale is equipped with only 10 GB of video memory. While NVIDIA’s solution shows a higher level of performance in 4K games and performs much better in ray-traced games, the low memory capacity puts it at odds against the 16GB GDDR6-equipped Radeon RX 6800 XT, especially when using high-resolution textures.

Igor Wallosek, the chief editor of Igor’s LAB, confirms the VideoCardz resource, which adds that the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will receive 20 GB of GDDR6X video memory and presumably the same number of CUDA cores as the flagship of the Ampere series – GeForce RTX 3090 (10,496 pieces) … Despite the fact that the new product is credited with a price tag of $ 999, this model will be able to offer a much more attractive performance-per-dollar ratio in comparison with the same GeForce RTX 3090, which has 24 GB of GDDR6X but is estimated at $ 1499.

Igor Vallosek also shared information about the upcoming GeForce RTX 3060. This model of the graphics accelerator will be presented in two versions: with 6 and 12 GB of GDDR6 video memory. At the same time, both versions will be based on the GA106 GPU with a different number of CUDA cores, which may cause confusion among buyers. In the past, NVIDIA has already resorted to a similar practice, for example, with the GeForce GTX 1060 (Pascal) model, which was offered in configurations with 3 and 6 GB of video memory, also with different GPUs.

Interestingly, according to Vallosek, the GeForce RTX 3060 with 6GB of video memory will be a renamed RTX 3050 Ti. Initially, it was the latter that was supposed to use the GA106 chip, but it seems that NVIDIA decided that it would be better for the GeForce RTX 3060. There is no information yet about whether the company is going to eventually release a Ti version of the RTX 3050 model. However, the manufacturer’s plans include the usual GeForce RTX 3050 based on the stripped-down GA107 chip.

The announcement of both versions of the GeForce RTX 3060 is scheduled for January next year. The senior version with 12 GB of video memory will be announced during the CES 2021 electronics exhibition (will be held from January 11 to 14), the announcement of the junior version with 6 GB of memory is scheduled for the end of next month. At the same time,  VideoCardz, referring to data from the Chinese resource ChannelGate, reports that the younger version may be delayed until February.
