Samsung Display asked the US for permission to supply screens for Huawei

According to online sources, Samsung Display has requested a license from the US Department of Commerce, which will allow the South Korean company to continue supplying OLED panels to China’s Huawei.

As in the case of the semiconductor division, Samsung Display will be forced after September 15 to stop supplying components to Huawei that were developed using US software or technology. The list of components, the export of which is prohibited by US sanctions, includes many components required for the production of smartphones. In the case of Samsung Display, we are talking about OLED display driver ICs that are manufactured using American technology.

Samsung and other companies that want to continue working with Huawei beyond September 15 must obtain a license from the US Department of Commerce. The source says that Samsung Display, unlike the company’s semiconductor division, applied for a license on Wednesday, September 9th.

Clearly Samsung Display doesn’t want to lose one of its biggest customers. Only Apple and Samsung’s consumer electronics division are overtaking the Chinese company in terms of orders received by Samsung Display. This means that the company has good reason to make an effort to maintain a business relationship with the Chinese tech giant. Previously, Samsung Display supplied Huawei OLED panels for flagship smartphones and some TV models.

LG Display, a competitor to Samsung Display, is in a similar position, but according to the source, it has not yet applied for a US Department of Commerce license. It is worth noting that LG Display supplied Huawei with a significantly smaller number of panels, so in case of termination of cooperation with Huawei, the manufacturer’s business will not be seriously damaged.
