The company should have abandoned the production of LCD panels but changed plans
Samsung Display announced that the company will indefinitely extend the production of LCD panels for TVs and monitors as demand for these products increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Samsung has extended the life of LCD panels
This spring, the South Korean giant announced that it will end production of all LCD panels by the end of this year and will instead focus on cutting-edge display technology.
However, Samsung Display announced a couple of months ago that the company is considering a short-term production extension. While the company is officially continuing to manufacture LCD panels, the company has stated that production times will be subject to market conditions and profitability.
Samsung has produced LCD panels in both South Korea and China. But in August, the company sold a majority stake in its LCD division in Suzhou to TCL Technology Group as the company shifted its focus to next-generation LED and QD-OLED panels.
Due to the shift to work from home, panel demand grew by 30% in the third quarter, according to TrendForce.
