Sony and Kioxia apply for the right to supply Huawei products

In mid-September, new restrictions on the supply of components for Huawei came into effect, some export license holders will have to submit new applications. Micron, for example, was one of them. Japanese media now report that Sony and Kioxia, for which Huawei is one of the largest consumers, have filed applications.

Speaking of memory manufacturers, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have already applied for licenses, so Kioxia is among the laggards in this regard. According to Nikkei Asian Review, the company receives about 40% of its revenue precisely from the sale of solid-state memory to smartphone manufacturers, and Huawei can claim a significant part of it. The source clarifies that at the same time as Kioxia, the Japanese corporation Sony, which is interested in Huawei’s supply of its optical sensors used in smartphone cameras, filed an application for an export license.

As of last weekend, the approval status of applications was not yet known. Sony is the largest supplier of optical sensors for smartphone cameras, with Huawei expected to account for about 20% of the company’s revenue. In August, Sony predicted a 45% decline in fiscal year operating profit for image sensors. The official reason for the deterioration of the forecast was associated with a decrease in demand for smartphones, but analysts believe that the private factor in the form of sanctions against Huawei, in this case, had a fairly high proportion. Huawei’s purchases of Japanese components grew by more than 50% in the past year, so local companies are justifiably trying to keep this important customer.
