Sony to pay nearly $ 1 billion for Crunchyroll anime platform

The publication notes that Sony has won exclusive bidding rights for the Crunchyroll platform, which has over 3 million paying subscribers. The streaming service is headquartered in San Francisco and has 70 million users from over 200 countries and regions. Crunchyroll was founded in 2006 and acquired by AT&T in 2018.

Sony not only gets millions of new users, but also more new content. Sony already owns Funimation, the American anime distributor. The acquisition will strengthen Sony’s position in the streaming market, now dominated by companies such as Netflix and Hulu.

Sources add that streaming services have continued to gain popularity in recent years amid the coronavirus pandemic.
