SpaceX implements lunar mission, paid for with Dogecoin cryptocurrency

It became known that the American company SpaceX is preparing to implement a mission to launch the lunar satellite DOGE-1 in the first quarter of 2022. The project’s highlight is that Elon Musk’s company is ready to accept the meme-inspired cryptocurrency Dogecoin as full payment for launching a payload into space.

Geometric Energy Corporation officially announced the implementation of the Dogecoin-funded mission, and the press service of SpaceX later confirmed this information in an email to journalists. According to reports, the DOGE-1 mission will send a 40-kilogram cubic satellite into space on the Falcon 9 launch vehicle, equipped with a set of sensors and cameras, as well as communication and computing systems. The cost of the project was not announced.

SpaceX’s vice president of commercial sales, Tom Ochinero, said the DOGE-1 project ” would demonstrate the use of cryptocurrency outside of Earth orbit and lay the foundation for interplanetary commerce .” He also added that SpaceX is delighted to launch DOGE-1 to the moon.

According to reports, the implementation of the DOGE-1 mission began after Elon Musk visited the Saturday Night Live TV show. In a conversation with the show hosts, he mentioned Dogecoin several times, after which the cryptocurrency fell in price by almost 30%. As for SpaceX, the information about the DOGE-1 project came on when the company once again sent a batch of Starlink communication satellites into orbit using a Falcon 9 launch vehicle, the first stage of which was reused for the tenth time.
