SpaceX is accelerating: there are two Starship prototypes at launch sites at the same time

It’s like a science fiction scene: two shiny silver spacecraft stand side by side in the Texas sun, waiting for their turn to take off. But SpaceX’s rockets – more precisely the Starship SN9 and SN10 prototypes – do exist, and on January 29 they first met at the launch site in South Texas near the village of Boca Chica.

The SN10 ship, the latest in the Starship series of reusable prototypes, has been delivered to the site, while its SN9 counterpart is expecting its own test flight, which is planned for the near future (tentatively named February 1). « Starship SN 9 and SN 10″, – wrote on the Twitter chief executive of SpaceX Elon Musk (Elon Musk), sharing the resulted photo of two suborbital rockets. Those wishing to see how the SN10 was delivered to the site can refer to the NASASpaceflight video:

Starship SN9 and SN10 are two of the latest prototypes of SpaceX’s future fully reusable system for launching astronauts and cargo into deep space. The SN9 and SN10 are powered by SpaceX’s three Raptor engines and are designed to perform suborbital test flights to an altitude of about 10 km.

SpaceX launched the Starship SN8, an earlier version of the spacecraft, on a similar test flight on December 9th. the ship reached an altitude of about 12.5 km, performed two turns when returning to Earth, before turning on the engines and attempting to land. The mission went well overall, but SN8 crashed on landing. SpaceX hopes that SN9 will be able to successfully return from the suborbital flight.

Many have waited in recent days for the SN9 to launch, but officials from the US Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees commercial missile launches, said the company has not yet received final approval to launch. “The FAA will continue to work with SpaceX to evaluate additional information provided by the company as part of its application to change the launch license,” an FAA spokesman said.

Starship is 50 meters high and the final version uses six Raptor engines for a spacewalk. The spacecraft will launch a massive 70-meter-high Super Heavy, which will use about 30 Raptor engines to deliver Starships into orbit.
