Beijing has long been developing a space exploration program. In January 2019, a Chinese spacecraft reached the far side of the moon for the first time. The mission was carried out by the interplanetary automatic station Chang’e-4. She landed on the satellite the Yutu-2 lunar rover, which returned to Earth 23 days after launch, having collected about 2 kg of lunar soil.

In May 2024, the Chang’e-6 apparatus is to collect samples in a crater on the far side of the Moon, necessary for the study of microimpurities and isotopes.
