In May 2018, Telegram filed a lawsuit against the startup for using the GRAM trademark, accusing it of copyright infringement, a false indication of origin, and unfair competition. In turn, Latah said that he filed an application for registration of a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) back in 2017.

The litigation continued in the US District Court for the Northern District of California until the collapse of the project to launch Telegram’s own cryptocurrency and blockchain platform TON (Telegram Open Network), which occurred after the SEC investigation into an initial token offering (ICO).

Due to the fact that they need to use the GRAM trademark has disappeared, Telegram submitted a petition to voluntarily terminate the case. On November 2, the court made a final decision on the case, approving Telegram’s petition to voluntarily dismiss the claim, provided that the company pays Lantah’s legal costs.

Telegram will pay Latah $ 618,240 in attorney fees and $ 6,737.35 in expenses. Latah originally requested $ 1,615,140 in royalties and $ 6,737.35 in remaining costs.
