Due to the use of a new chip
One of the improvements to the iPhone 15 series is the new second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. This chip can communicate with other devices that have the same chip over an increased distance compared to the U1 chip used in previous generation iPhones and AirTags.
The new Find My feature allows iPhone 15 users to find friends who also have an iPhone 15 using a Precision Finding interface that displays constantly updated distance and direction indicators.
Teknofilo’s demo shows the iPhone 15 connecting to another phone about 60 meters away, which is significantly longer than the range we’ve seen Precision Finding work at with AirTags.
The advantage of the iPhone 15 was shown live
This feature is activated by simply selecting a friend in the Find My app. When the precise search is available, a Find: Nearby button will be visible on the details card. The distance and direction arrow is constantly updated as the user gets closer to the friend’s location.
The video backs up Apple’s claims that the second-generation chip has three times the range of the U1. The maximum precision search range for AirTags is about 10–15 meters. Presumably, the future AirTags model will be equipped with a new ultra-wideband chip and will significantly improve the process of searching for objects.
