This mesh is a necessary element of protection
The Russian MS-21 passenger airliner received comprehensive protection against lightning strikes. Andrey Yashutin, head of the design bureau of the Engineering Center of PJSC Yakovlev, spoke about this.
According to the engineer, all MS-21 equipment is specially tested for lightning strikes. For this purpose, special tests are carried out in which the units are struck by real lightning, created artificially.
The “black wing” of the MS-21 aircraft is covered with a thin copper mesh – for what?
“ The composite wing is covered with a thin copper mesh, which allows electricity to “drain.” A lightning strike at any point on the plane actually leads to electricity spreading throughout the entire fuselage ,” explained Andrei Yashutin.
He also added that all lightning resistance tests were successfully carried out. “ We can guarantee that everything is excellent with the lightning resistance of the aircraft ,” summed up Andrei Yashutin.
