The bulk of NVIDIA Ampere graphics cards will be content with traditional power connectors

Recently, quite official sources spread information about the specifications of a new 12-pin auxiliary power connector, capable of transmitting up to 600 watts. Such connectors should be equipped with NVIDIA gaming video cards of the Ampere family. The company’s partners are convinced that in most cases they will manage by combining the old power connectors.

The popular site Gamers Nexus conducted its investigation on this topic. He explains that NVIDIA has been hatching the idea of using a new 12-pin power connector for connecting video cards for several years, and manufacturers of the corresponding components are actively preparing for its appearance on the market. In the retail segment, such changes are unlikely to seriously manifest themselves, as the source explains, so buyers of video cards should not worry too much about compatibility with their existing power supplies.

In turn, NVIDIA partners are convinced that they will be able to equip Ampere gaming video cards of their own design with a combination of either two or three eight-pin additional power connectors. The need to use a new type of 12-pin connector may be faced mainly by large manufacturers of ready-made computers such as HP or Dell, according to the source. This will not be a big problem for them – they receive video cards from the outside, and ordering power supplies with a new type of connector will not be difficult. If you install a new video card in a system with power supply without a 12-pin connector, you can do it with a special adapter.
