The latest version of Firefox gets improved picture-in-picture mode and improved performance

Mozilla has begun rolling out its proprietary Firefox 82 browser for desktop users. This update does not contain major changes, but it improves browser performance and brings an improved picture-in-picture mode.

Instead of the bland blue picture-in-picture button that used to appear on the side of the video, Firefox now displays a transparent gray box at the bottom right of the video that explains what the button is and what it does. After the user learns about its capabilities, it will be displayed as a round button with a picture-in-picture icon. Alternatively, Mac users can activate the feature by pressing the Option + Command + Shift key combination. The command works even before the video starts playing, so the user does not need to waste time waiting for the download before switching tabs.

Firefox for Windows now uses DirectComposition for hardware video decoding, which optimizes CPU and GPU usage when watching videos, helping to improve laptop battery life. In addition, overall browser performance has improved significantly. According to the Firefox 82 release notes, websites using a flexbox-based layout load 20 percent faster than before, session recovery is 17 percent faster, and new browser windows open 10 percent faster on Windows.

macOS and Windows users will receive the update automatically, while Linux users will have to wait a while.
