The launch of the long-term construction module “Science” to the ISS may be postponed again

It is not excluded that the launch of the multifunctional laboratory module (MLM) “Nauka” into orbit will be postponed again. At least, as reported by RIA Novosti, such information is contained in the preliminary flight program of the International Space Station (ISS).

Let’s remind that MLM is a long-term construction, the history of which has a quarter of a century. The creation of Nauka began in 1995 when this unit was considered as a backup for the Zarya functional cargo module. Then it was decided to transform the MLM into a full-fledged flight module for scientific purposes, with the launch in 2007.

After numerous delays, Nauka was supposed to finally enter the ISS in April next year. However, the ISS flight plan, developed by RSC Energia, states that the launch of the MLM on the Proton-M launch vehicle from the Baikonur cosmodrome is scheduled for July 15. Docking with the orbital complex is to be carried out on July 23.

However, it is emphasized that the specified schedule has not yet been approved. So the launch of “Science” can be carried out in the previously scheduled time – until the end of April.

We add that MLM will be able to carry onboard up to 3 tons of scientific equipment. The equipment will include a European robotic arm ERA with a length of 11.3 meters and a port for docking transport ships.
