The use of social media has grown as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, especially the popularity of the WhatsApp messenger. This was reported by the analytical company Kantar in its report on the study COVID-19 Barometer.
The study was conducted from March 14 to 24 among more than 25 thousand users in 30 regions. WhatsApp received the biggest surge in popularity during this period. On average, the use of Facebook-owned messenger grew by 40%, by 27% at the beginning of the pandemic and by 41% in the middle phase.

In countries where the pandemic is in its final phase, WhatsApp usage is up 51%. The indicator varies from region to region. For example, in Spain, the popularity of WhatsApp jumped as much as 76%.
Other social media are also experiencing a surge in popularity, including Facebook, as well as Chinese WeChat and Weibo. The use of Facebook grew by 37%, while Chinese media grew by 58%.
