Ubisoft says PS5 will only be backward compatible with PS4 games
Ubisoft recently confirmed that backward compatibility on the PlayStation 5 console will only work with PS4 games – PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles won’t be able to run on Sony’s next-gen consoles. This information was posted on the Ubisoft support page.
“As part of the next generation upgrade process, PlayStation offers a number of features designed to help you migrate from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, ” it said. ” PlayStation 4 players will be able to join multiplayer games with PlayStation 5 players . Backward compatibility will be available for supported PS 4 titles , but will not be available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation generation games .”
It is worth noting that the information comes from Ubisoft, not Sony, and therefore may relate to one particular studio’s response to backward compatibility of its projects with the PS5, rather than the general ability to run older generation games on a future Sony console. Nevertheless, this is quite in line with the statements made earlier by Sony itself. So there is little hope for the same advanced backward compatibility that the Xbox One or Xbox Series X can boast.
The PlayStation 5 is slated for release in mid-November – about a week after Microsoft releases the Xbox Series X.
