Game designer Carl Sanford Joslyn Petersen in a new video on his YouTube channel took an unusual tour of one of the Doom 2: Hell on Earth levels.

The tour is peculiar in that in the video the game designer leads the audience through his house in Texas – it was from him that a section of the map in the 16th mission of the game called Suburbs (“Suburb”) was once debited.

According to the game designer, during the production of Doom 2: Hell on Earth, the house was just being built, and the developer decided to borrow the building layout for the mentioned level.

The similarities are easy to see: a library, a cacodemon in the kitchen, a microwave oven (in the game there are a pair of malevolent eyes in its place), a staircase to the second floor, and a garage full of hellish monsters.

However, there are also enough differences. The bookshelf in Peterson’s library does not drop down like in a shooter, and the secret does not allow unlocking. Missing in Doom 2: Hell on Earth and the game designer’s playroom.

According to Petersen, the matter was not limited to his house alone: the developer also recreated his parents’ dwelling in the game. It turned out not so recognizable anymore, but similar elements can still be traced.

Earlier, Petersen shared an entertaining story from the development of the original Quake. The game lacked several bosses, and the game designer suggested adding enlarged versions of ordinary enemies instead.
