Windows 10 update crashed chkdsk and results in blue screens of death when checking drives

It became known that the recent update KB4592438, which was released this month for the software platforms Windows 10 (20H2) and Windows 10 (2004), in some cases leads to errors in the operation of the built-in utility for checking drives chkdsk. The presence of a problem after downloading the mentioned service pack is evidenced by user appeals that appeared on the Microsoft support forums.

Windows 10

Reportedly, in some cases, after installing KB4592438, the built-in chkdsk function, which is used to check drives for file system errors, does not work. The source says that some users who tried to use the chkdsk tool after installing the December Windows 10 Update have encountered Blue Screens of Death (BSOD). The error occurs while checking the drive. After restarting the computer, the system is restored to operability, but repeated use of chkdsk leads to a similar result.

It is currently unknown how widespread the error is. The source only mentions that it is found in some users of the most current versions of the Windows 10 operating system who have already downloaded a recent update to their computers.

Obviously, Microsoft will release a bug fix in the future and include it in a future update. Until then, users who are faced with the impossibility of checking the file system of storage media using chkdsk, it is better to abandon the use of this tool or should postpone the installation of the December update for Windows 10.
