iPhone 14 worked as it should
On Friday, July 21, a man was saved using an iPhone 14 after he drove his car off a cliff and fell about 120m into a canyon in Mount Wilson near Los Angeles.
The iPhone 14 features that helped save the man’s life were “Crash Detection” and “Satellite SOS Emergency Call”. Initially, the smartphone automatically detected the fact of a car accident. The device then automatically sent a text message to the emergency relay center via satellite because the crash site was out of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. The message contained accurate location information and the local search and rescue team was able to locate and rescue the man using a helicopter.
Without the iPhone 14, he would most likely have bled to death
“He was 120 feet deep in a canyon with virtually no way out,” said Steve Goldsworthy, head of rescue operations. “Who knows when we would have found it.” Another member of the search and rescue team said the man would likely have bled to death had he not been rescued in time.
In the US, an emergency SOS call via satellite requires an iPhone 14 updated to iOS 16.1 or later.
