Xiaomi has come up with a “horned” smartphone with two double-sided retractable cameras

The Chinese company Xiaomi, one of the world’s leading smartphone suppliers, is designing a device with a very unusual system of front and rear cameras.

The description of the device, as reported by the LetsGoDigital resource, appeared on the website of China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). The patent documents contain images of the gadget.

As you can see in the illustrations, we are talking about a monoblock type smartphone with a completely frameless display. This panel has neither a cutout nor a hole for a selfie camera. Cameras are not visible in the rear.

The secret of the novelty lies in the use of a unique system of retractable cameras hidden in the upper area of the body. Two periscope modules are involved, which in operating mode are located at an angle to each other, resembling small horns.

Each of the modules contains front and rear cameras. Thus, a total of four image sensors are used. For a pair of rear cameras, a flash is provided, located near the top edge.

The smartphone doesn’t have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. At the same time, side physical control buttons and asymmetrical USB Type-C port are visible.

Whether Xiaomi is planning to release a commercial device with the described design is not yet clear.
