ZTE unveils Axon 20 5G, the world’s first smartphone with a hidden camera

A couple of weeks ago, ZTE announced that it would launch the world’s first smartphone with a sub-screen front camera. Later, information appeared that the device would be called the Axon 20 5G, and its first renders were also published. The smartphone was officially presented today.

The main “chip” on which the emphasis is placed in the new smartphone is the front camera, located directly under the display. This move made it possible to deprive the screen of any cutouts. The matrix of the smartphone is a 6.92-inch OLED panel that demonstrates one hundred percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color space and supports 10-bit color. The refresh rate of the screen is 90 Hz, and the polling rate of the touch layer reaches 240 Hz. The display has a Full HD + resolution.

ZTE claims to be able to position the camera under the screen through the use of five innovative technologies, including special materials, dual control chips, unique drivers, a specially designed sensor, and its own camera algorithms. Earlier it was reported that it took the company more than two years to implement the technology.

The company has used materials with increased transparency for the display, a combination of organic and inorganic films. This helped increase the amount of light reaching the front camera sensor. In addition, the combination of a dual control chip and dedicated drivers helped to minimize interference and limit the display’s exposure to the camera. And thanks to a specially developed algorithm, ZTE has optimized the camera’s performance in different lighting conditions. The front sensor also supports auto dynamic range, which greatly improves the clarity and contrast of the resulting image.

In addition to the sub-screen camera, the ZTE Axon 20 5G boasts a body that is only 7.98 mm thick. The smartphone weighs 198 grams, which is not so much for a device with a display diagonal of just under 7 inches.

The device is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset, which is paired with 6 or 8 GB of RAM. The storage capacity can be 128 or 256 GB. The back of the smartphone, made of high-strength curved ten-layer glass, houses a rectangular main camera unit. The main sensor has a resolution of 64 megapixels and is complemented by one 8-megapixel and two 2-megapixel sensors. The smartphone is also equipped with stereo speakers with surround sound effects. In addition, the device is equipped with 12 antennas and supports dual 5G bands. The battery capacity of the device is 4220 mAh. Supports 30W fast charging.

The cost of the basic version of the smartphone is $ 322, and the maximum configuration will cost $ 410. It will start selling on September 10th.
