But not as unusual as last year

A year ago, Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop 3, which included AMD processors. Moreover, these were special  “custom” APUs, different from the usual ones.

A strange AMD processor at the heart of Microsoft’s new laptop. Companies are preparing a unique offer again

The Ryzen 7 3780U Microsoft Surface Edition Processor and Ryzen 5 3580U Microsoft Surface Edition Processor had a lower TDP and increased GPU stream processors.

It looks like Microsoft has enjoyed the experience and is preparing a new laptop based on AMD APUs. He lit up in the Geekbench database. Thanks to it, we know that the APU has eight cores with SMT support and operates at frequencies of 2.0-4.0 GHz. Interestingly, it is called Ryzen 7 3780U Microsoft Surface Edition, which is the same as last year’s APU. Still, at the same time, it is a completely different solution with at least twice as many cores. The new product clearly belongs to the Ryzen 4000U line, and the old name is probably the result of a mistake. If the name is really left the old one, it will be extraordinary and controversial.

In terms of its parameters, the test processor is closest to the Ryzen 7 4800U, but the frequencies are slightly different. Moreover, this time, Microsoft will not increase the number of GPU execution units since the Ryzen 7 4800U contains 512 stream processors, which is the maximum for this Ryzen line.

Thus, it is likely that the APU in the new Microsoft laptop will not differ as much from the regular production models as last year, but still, it is worth waiting for the announcement.
