It seems that in the next generation of AMD Radeon graphics cards there will no longer be graphics accelerators with 4 GB of video memory, even entry-level ones. The company devoted its latest blog post to talking about the fact that in many modern games 4 GB is already clearly not enough.
A number of new high-quality projects really benefit significantly due to the presence of a large amount of video memory for storing the necessary resources, working in high resolution and applying the latest visual effects. Today, AMD offers a wide selection of graphics cards with 6 or 8 GB of video memory: these are the Radeon RX 570, RX 580, RX 590, and the RX 5000 series.
AMD noted that with a lack of video memory even in 1080p, players today may experience a number of problems:
- error messages and warnings about restrictions;
- reduced frame rate;
- texture issues and gameplay delays.
AMD cited an example that the Radeon 5500 XT 8 GB can run Doom Eternal with Ultra Nightmare settings at 75 frames / s in 1080p, while the same 4 GB card is simply not able to apply the same graphics settings. And in games like Borderlands 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Forza Horizon 4, Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, when comparing cards with 4 GB and 8 GB of video memory, there is an increase in performance by up to 19%.
AMD, of course, emphasizes that it is leading the market for video cards, offering at the same price as its competitor, accelerators with a more impressive amount of video memory. But it is much more important that speaking of the end of the era of accelerators with 4 GB of video memory, the company is unlikely to release such products in the next generation of RDNA 2, which is expected this year.
