AMD Shows Ray Tracing On Radeon Graphics Cards In All Its Glory In Hangar 21 Demo

AMD Shows Ray Tracing On Radeon Graphics Cards In All Its Glory In Hangar 21 Demo

As promised a few days ago, after the release of the new Radeon RX 6000 family of video cards based on the RDNA 2 architecture, the Hangar 21 technology demo was published. It is designed to show the advantages of the advanced capabilities of the new accelerators in all its glory.

The video itself tells a short and simple story about how a certain either an android or a cyborg, armed with swords, sneaks onto a guarded object, secretly moves through this hangar, steals a spaceship by hacking, and safely flies away on it into space. To realize the juicy picture, AMD used technologies from the DirectX 12 Ultimate set, its own set of FidelityFX effects, and the PopcornFX particle engine.

Separately, AMD released a video in which it suggested drawing attention to the key technological points of the demonstration:

  • dynamic light sources;
  • volumetric rays of light;
  • real-time global illumination;
  • realistic ray-traced ambient occlusion shading model;
  • calculation of the interaction of light with the model depending on the type of material;
  • volumetric fog interacting with light;
  • application of screen space reflection techniques;
  • reflections and shadows based on ray tracing;
  • realistic depth of field effect;
  • detailed textures for models in 8K resolution;
  • textures for the starry sky in 16K HDR quality.

    Both videos are published at 1080p and show 60fps. Unfortunately, even owners of new video cards will not be able to run the demo on their systems – this is just a video recorded in real-time. Perhaps, in the future, Hangar 21 will be fully launched, supplemented, for example, with testing and performance evaluation tools.
