AMD: Zen 3-Based Consumer Processors Coming This Year

Rick Bergman, executive vice president of compute and graphics technology at AMD, made a very important announcement today via the company’s blog. He announced that AMD will launch Ryzen consumer processors based on the Zen 3 microarchitecture this year.

AMD has previously said that it is going to introduce new processors on the Zen 3 architecture this year. However, the company did not explicitly indicate which specific segment of the processor market we are talking about – consumer or corporate. At the same time, it has been known for a long time that in 2020 EPYC Milan server processors are expected to be released on the new Zen 3 architecture, which will replace the current EPYC Rome based on Zen 2. However, today AMD officially announced for the first time that the Zen microarchitecture 3 will be introduced this year in the consumer chips segment.

The last few reds announcements may have upset PC enthusiasts as the high-performance Ryzen Threadripper Pro multi-core processors and Ryzen 4000 Zen 2 hybrid desktop APUs were presented exclusively as OEM-supplied turnkey solutions.

In a corporate blog, Rick Bergman told what awaits AMD in the near future:

“So what’s next for AMD in the PC market? I can’t tell you everything right now, but I can assure you that our high-performance adventure will continue with the first Zen 3 architecture consumer processors to be unveiled this year. In conclusion, I will say that the best is of course yet to come

While Bergman pointed to consumer processors based on the 7nm Zen 3 microarchitecture, he, unfortunately, did not elaborate on what kind of chip he is talking about. After all, in the end, you can think not only about desktop processors of the Ryzen 4000 series (Vermeer), but also a new family of Ryzen mobile chips, which, according to rumors, will be called  Cezanne.

In a statement, AMD’s VP of Computing and Graphics Technology also noted that AMD’s latest generation of mobile processors has attracted increased interest and is gradually gaining more and more fans. Therefore, AMD is not going to slow down and wants to strengthen its position in the mobile segment, which accounts for 60% of the consumer market for systems based on x86 processors.

It should be recalled that Intel is also going to introduce a new generation of Tiger Lake mobile processors this year, so the release of AMD mobile chips based on the Zen 3 architecture this year would be very useful to contain the upcoming attack from the 10nm process technology of a competitor. At the same time, the launch of the desktop Ryzen 4000 (Vermeer) would allow AMD to cement its success in the desktop processor market.
