AMD’s flagship 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X was able to automatically overclock above 5 GHz

A couple of days ago, we reported that the older Ryzen 5000 processors from AMD almost obeyed the 5 GHz frequency mark without manual overclocking in the synthetic Geekbench 5 test. The Ryzen 9 5950X and Ryzen 9 5900X chips were separated by only a few tens of megahertz. However, in the new test, the flagship of the series, the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X, was still able to overcome the psychological barrier.

The Ryzen 9 5950X has an official maximum frequency of 4.9 GHz in auto overclocking mode. However, this value does not take into account the Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) – a technology that, under certain conditions (higher chip quality, powerful cooling system), allows the processor to squeeze frequencies above the official declared maximum. Intel’s equivalent is Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) technology.

In the Geekbench 5 test, the new AMD flagship was able to show the frequency value at 5.04 GHz. The last time the “red” processors conquered the 5 GHz frequency in the automatic overclocking mode was back in 2013, during the Piledriver architecture. Then the flagship of the Vishera family, the eight-core AMD FX-9590, demonstrated in our review using the active Turbo Core technology the operating frequency of 5.016 GHz. But, we repeat, now we are talking about a 16-core processor with a completely different architecture.

According to Internet detective Tum_Apisak, the more recent performance results of the flagship on Zen 3 in single-threaded and multi-threaded tests turned out to be noticeably better than last time. The Ryzen 9 5950X scored 1,663 points in a single thread, and 15,782 points in a multi-thread. Last time these values ​​were 1575 and 13,605 points, respectively.

The Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 7 5800X have also benefited from PBO technology. For the twelve- and eight-core chips, respectively, the maximum frequencies are declared at 4.8 and 4.7 GHz, respectively. However, in the same Geekbench 5, they were able to show the result at 4.94 and 4.84 GHz. Thanks to this, the Ryzen 9 5900X scored 1605 and 12,869 points in single-threaded and multi-threaded tests. Unfortunately, the source does not provide data on the Ryzen 7 5800X model, since they were “spoiled” by the low-frequency RAM, which underestimated the results.

The new Ryzen 9 5950X results allow it to further break away from Intel’s flagship Core i9-10900K. The new AMD processor achieves 17.7% superiority in the single-threaded Geekbench 5 test, despite the competitor’s higher maximum frequency of 5.3 GHz. In multi-threaded tasks, the new AMD flagship was up to 6.9% faster than the 18-core Intel Core i9-10980XE. According to Tom’s Hardware, at the moment, only AMD Ryzen Threadripper chips, not designed for ordinary consumers, show higher multi-threaded performance than Ryzen 9 5950X.
