And Zen 5 should be just another revolution
The Zen 2 and Zen 3 architectures have brought huge performance gains over their predecessors. Moreover, in the second case, AMD did without even switching to a new technical process.
AMD’s new processors will continue to impress with performance gains in the coming years. Zen 4 could deliver huge gains
According to numerous rumors and leaks, the company’s future CPUs with Zen 4 architecture will already be 5nm. But what about performance?
According to the source, Zen 4 will again provide an impressive increase in instruction execution rate (IPC). More specifically, the growth will be 29% for Genoa server CPUs. Since we are talking about architecture, other processors based on Zen 4 will have about the same increase in IPC. Moreover, firstly, the source talks about Genoa’s engineering samples, that is, serial ones can be even faster, and secondly, it is only about the growth of IPC. After all, thanks to the new technical process, frequencies should also increase. As a result, the overall performance gain can reach an incredible 40%. At one time, about the same rumors were about Zen 3, and in the end, they turned out to be true.
Also, the source says little about other architectures—for example, Zen 3+. The slightly updated Ryzen desktop CPUs will probably be released on it while maintaining the process technology and the number of cores. The performance gain will be small but higher than the Zen to Zen + transition. The source expects IPC to grow by 4-7%, which is also good.
At the same time, interestingly, processors based on the Zen 3+ architecture may be the first to switch to the AM5 socket. If this is the case, then, probably, such CPUs will be released at the end of this year as a full-fledged new generation of Ryzen 6000 (as was the case with desktop Ryzen 2000). And only Ryzen 7000 will already switch to the 5 nm process technology but will be released at the same time, apparently, at the end of 2022.
Processors based on Zen 5 architecture await us even further in the future. There is very little information here, and it was obtained from a less reliable source, but it is still worth considering. It is said that the transition from Zen 4 to Zen 5 will be comparable to the change from Piledriver to Zen, and Zen 5’s IPC relative to Zen may be planned to be threefold.
