We predict that Apple is likely to release a foldable iPhone with an 8-inch flexible QHD + OLED display in 2023, with SDC being the exclusive display supplier and Samsung Foundry the exclusive DDI supplier. Foldable iPhones will ship 15-20 million units in 2023. We expect foldable iPhones to use TPK’s silver nanowire sensor solution as it has a number of advantages over SDC Y-Octa technology.

Kuo predicts foldable smartphones will become indispensable for all major smartphone brands and accelerate the next “super-change cycle” for high-end models. He believes Apple is well-positioned to become the largest supplier of foldable smartphones. According to Kuo, Apple will ship between 15 and 20 million foldable iPhones in 2023.

Currently, foldable smartphones are being marketed as a product that combines a smartphone and a tablet. But we think the foldable smartphone is just one of the foldable applications. We predict that foldable devices will blur product segments between smartphones, tablets, and laptops in the future. With its cross-product ecosystem and strengths in hardware design, Apple will be the biggest winner in the emerging foldable device trend.

Kuo says Apple is already using silver nanowires for the HomePod touchscreen interface, allowing Apple to “master the technology” with less cost and low volume production.
