BMW iNext electric crossover to be unveiled next week

BMW iNext electric crossover to be unveiled next week

German company BMW has announced plans to unveil a production version of the BMW iNext electric vehicle next week, which it previously called its response to American automaker Tesla.

As noted by the resource Electrek, since the release of its first serial electric car BMW i3, the German automaker has been extremely slowly developing this direction.

The first BMW i3 rolled off the assembly line in 2013 and only recently has the company released the Mini Cooper SE and BMW iX3 electric cars. In doing so, the company had to make significant compromises. The Mini Cooper SE was launched without the company’s latest electric drive technology, inheriting the powerplant from the BMW i3S, and the BMW iX3 won’t even hit the US market, as BMW dealerships apparently didn’t show interest in it due to its low range.

In many ways, these new electric vehicles only laid the groundwork for the BMW iNext, which the automaker has been touting for years.

The German automaker unveiled the iNext concept in 2018, but only today announced that the production version of the iNext will be announced on November 11. The event will begin at 16:00 Moscow time. As stated in the press release, the event will be held online and will consist of several parts. In particular, the film “Chasing iNEXT” (Chasing iNEXT), filmed by the Cologne company btf (bildundtonfabrik) in the style of a streaming service, will be shown, which tells about the work on a new electric car of different divisions.

Little is known about the new BMW electric car, the name of which will most likely differ from the preliminary name iNext. The company originally said it would have a range of 435 miles (700 km), although that figure was reduced to 360 miles (579 km) last year.

The BMW iNext is also expected to go into production at the company’s Dingolfing plant in 2021.
