Whether such a product will be released is still unknown

Canon recently filed with the Japanese Patent Office, which describes an interesting accessory for interchangeable lens cameras. It is a variable magnification teleconverter (1x-2x) equipped with an optical image stabilizer and a variable ND filter.

The illustrations for the application show the optical scheme of the teleconverter, in which two of the four elements can move along the optical axis, which leads to a change in magnification. The design provides for fixation in positions corresponding to the magnification of 1x, 1.5x, and 2x.

As conceived by Canon, the converter can be equipped with a display (indicated by the number 11 in the last illustration), which will display the current magnification value and other information about the converter, camera, and lens.

When it comes to compatible lenses, one of the unique aspects of this teleconverter when compared to current Canon teleconverters is the lack of optical elements that protrude beyond the attachment points. If this is not a convention of illustrations, then lenses such as the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, which is currently only partially compatible with Canon RF teleconverters, should theoretically work with this converter without restrictions. However, so far we are only talking about a patent application. Whether the product described in it will be released is still unknown.
