PlayStation 5 gets first major update: user-friendly HDR, extended support for 120Hz displays and other innovations
Sony has released the first major firmware update for its PlayStation 5 game console. For example, some important features of the new software are storing the latest generation games on an external hard drive, the company said yesterday. Additional details have become known today.
The main innovations of the update are:
- Share Play support between PS5 and PS4;
- function “Request to join a game session”;
- improved Game Base function;
- disable game chat and adjust player volume levels;
- preloading game updates;
- customizable library of games;
- screen scaling;
- settings for trophies and statistics screen.
Besides, the company has changed how the HDR function works. Now you don’t have to dig into the settings to manually enable HDR in those game projects that support this technology. HDR will turn on automatically when supported content is launched. The update also brought the ability to turn on the TV when the console starts up automatically. And when you turn off the TV, the console will go into sleep mode. These functions can be activated in the STB settings.
The manufacturer has also expanded support for 120Hz displays. PS5 now supports Full HD 120Hz PC monitors. Unfortunately, the promised support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology has not yet appeared.
A firmware update for the PlayStation 5 is now available for download and installation. Its size is 902 MB.
