Google broke SMS messages on many Android smartphones and is now trying to fix everything

Google has released a problematic update to the Carrier Services app for the Android mobile operating system. It is noted that after its installation, SMS messages stopped working for many smartphone owners. Now the company is trying to fix the error and has withdrawn the non-working update.

According to Android Police, the update of Carrier Services version 50 brought with it problems sending and receiving SMS messages, which in most cases was encountered by users of Samsung, OnePlus, LG, Motorola, and TCL smartphones. According to the source, individual users who faced the problem have now received an older version of Carrier Services v48. In other words, Google is aware of the problem and is trying to solve it.

As pointed out by Ars Technica, Carrier Services is a system component of the Android operating system that appeared in the Play Store in 2017. The package is distributed under the name “com.google.android.ims”, and the component itself is part of the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) architecture. Google typically uses Carrier Services to push new RCS features to users. As stated in the Play Store description, “Carrier Services allows you to receive communications services from mobile operators based on the latest technologies. In particular, the app supports battery saving and advanced Android Messaging features. ” Since the Play Store has over a billion downloads of Carrier Services as the default Android app, this could mean a huge user base.

At the same time, Carrier Services is not present on all devices. If it is present and the problems observed after the update, Android Police recommends manually rolling back to the previous version. To do this, in the system settings in the search column, type “Carrier Services”, and then go to the application tab. You can check the version in the Advanced tab by scrolling down the list of settings. After making sure that the 50th version of Carrier Services is installed on the device, you need to click on the menu with three dots in the upper right corner and select “Uninstall updates”. After that, the application will roll back to the version with which the device was originally supplied.
